Decorated natural fiber composite enables lightweight construction with a focus on design
Industrially scalable material and decoration concept
Sustainability, resource efficiency, and sophisticated design are shaping the requirements of the international automotive and consumer goods industries. KURZ and Polyvlies demonstrate how these demands can be combined in an industrially scalable material and decoration concept.
The innovation does not lie in the substrate material itself: Natural Fiber Polypropylene (NFPP) has been used in automotive manufacturing for many years. What is new is the targeted finishing and visual enhancement of the natural fiber composite. Through decorative and protective surface design, NFPP evolves from a purely functional material into a visible design element that combines environmental benefits with premium aesthetics.
One advantage of NFPP components is that they are significantly lighter than comparable solutions made from conventional injection molded plastic parts, while still providing very good mechanical features.
Another key advantage is the material-compatible construction: Since the thermoplastic component consists entirely of polypropylene, the material remains mono-material. This facilitates recycling and creates important conditions for the efficient circular use of the components.

The challenge
In interior and furnishing applications, components must meet demanding requirements for stability, functionality, and design. At the same time, there is growing demand for materials that combine premium design, functionality, and efficient material use. These materials can also help reduce component weight and enable the implementation of recycled material concepts. Conventional plastic solutions are increasingly reaching ecological and structural limitations.
What is needed are solutions that incorporate natural raw materials, offer attractive decorative surfaces, enable premium surface quality, and support the efficient use of materials.

The objective
The objective was to fully leverage the lightweight potential of Natural Fiber Polypropylene (NFPP) and establish the natural fiber composite – which has mostly been hidden from view – as a visible, premium design element in product design.
The focus was on low weight, high mechanical stability, design freedom of the surface decoration, suitability for industrial series production, and the potential for improved recyclability.
The solution
The decoration technology developed by KURZ makes it possible to enhance large format NFPP components both functionally and aesthetically. The composite material highlights the natural, distinctive structure of fibers such as flax or kenaf, giving surfaces a premium and authentic character.
At the same time, the technology offers a wide range of design possibilities – from subtle, natural tones to customized colors and design variations – while providing long-lasting surface protection.
Additional sound and thermal insulating properties further enhance the material’s functional benefits. The decoration technology developed by KURZ is specifically tailored to the thermoplastic base material of NFPP. This makes it possible to utilize the recycling process developed by Polyvlies. Edge trims and rejected parts generated, for example, during production are collected and mechanically processed at Polyvlies. The reprocessed materials can then be partially reintegrated into the production of new NFPP. This helps support the objective of conserving valuable resources.

Advantages
NFPP benefits at a glance
- Natural fibers create a distinctive new material aesthetic
- Recyclable multiple times
- Recycled PP can be incorporated
- Lightweight yet stable components
- High degree of design freedom for customized surfaces
- Pleasant tactile feel
- Sound- and thermal-insulating properties
Conclusion
With the NFPP surface solution, KURZ and Polyvlies bring natural materials and modern surface design together. The material structure is based on the targeted selection and combination of the materials used. As a result, NFPP components are durable and stable.
This creates solutions for a wide range of industries that combine natural aesthetics and premium design in a single material concept.
